Teaching Toddlers

Towards the end of 2009 I decided to start "homeschooling" my girls (3 and 18 months). I ordered some materials and planned to dive in at the first of the year. After one day of teaching (actually, it was more like 20 minutes) I realized that I was not quite as prepared as I thought I was. We took a break to regroup and we're back to it this week. Inspired by Claire's favorite show, I decided to take things super slow and focus on one letter of the alphabet each week.

This week we kicked things off with the letter "A." We started off this morning with a viewing of "Alice in Wonderland. I know, I know. Not very inspirational or creative. But I had a number of chores to catch up on from this weekend that we skipped. The rest of my plans this week include simple things such as looking for the letter "A" in all of the books that we read, looking for objects that begin with "A," and practicing writing "A."

None of these things seem like a big deal, but I'm hoping that incoorperating these little lessons into the things that we are already doing everyday will pay off big in the long run.

My daughter 2 1/2 and we have been working on letters, Alphabet, reconzizing for about 3 months now. She has been singing her letters for about a year but had no idea why she was singing them. She catches on quickly and we bought her the leap frog alphabet refigerator toy (sorry I dont know the exact name). She LOVES it. Its more like a game to her and she has learned so much from it.
We also found an erasable alphabet mat at walmart for 1.00. Its one of the table place mats and I set her in her chair while I am making her food and game show style "quiz" her on her letters. She knows them all now from these activities.
There are also letter oriented books you can buy. We have an old set called My First " " book. Each letter has its on book and they are full of stories and words based on that letter. We read these too.

Sorry so long but we are trying to homeschool our toddler and I love when I get helpful ideas too. Ill keep checking in to see how it all goes and hope to get some great ideas for my little one.
